Fair Use Policy

This policy sets out the fair and reasonable usage terms for dashcam devices purchased through Matrix iQ. It explains how your camera works, what counts as an "event," and the monthly allowance in place to keep the service reliable and fairly priced for all drivers.

How Your Camera Works

Your Matrix iQ dashcam is not a live-streaming or continuously recording device. It does not hold a rolling recording that can be reviewed on demand. Instead, footage is only captured and downloaded from the device when one of the following triggers an event:

  • An accident or collision detected by the device
  • An incident flagged by the driver or a third party (e.g. a dispute, altercation, or safety concern)
  • Manual activation of the panic button

When triggered, the device downloads the footage surrounding that event for review. Outside of a triggered event, no footage is recorded or stored.

Monthly Fair Use Allowance

Because footage downloads use data and processing capacity, a fair use allowance applies per camera type, per calendar month. The allowance differs depending on whether the footage is manually requested or automatically uploaded.

Manual Download Requests

Manual downloads are requested directly through the portal for a specific date, time, and vehicle. These are captured from a single camera channel per request.

Monthly Allowance

Single-camera device

Outward-facing camera only

6 requests / month

Dual-camera device

Outward-facing or inward-facing camera (one channel per request)

6 requests / month

Automatically Uploaded Footage

Certain events trigger an automatic upload of footage from both camera channels simultaneously, without any manual intervention required. Because both channels upload as part of a single triggered event, the allowance below applies per incident rather than per channel.

Monthly Allowance

Single-camera device

Outward-facing camera only

6 events / month

Dual-camera device

Outward-facing + inward-facing (cabin) camera, both downloading simultaneously per event

4 events / month

An "event" is counted once per triggered incident, regardless of how many camera channels upload footage. A dual-camera device uploading footage from both channels for one incident still counts as one event.

What Triggers an Automatic Upload

  • Collision or accident detection — triggered automatically by the device's impact sensors
  • Panic button activation — triggered manually by the driver or passenger

What Counts as a Manual Download Request

  • Post-incident review — footage downloaded following a reported dispute, complaint, or safety concern relating to a specific journey
  • Any other footage request raised directly through the portal

Routine driving, braking, or minor road noise does not trigger an automatic upload and does not draw on the monthly allowance.

Exceeding the Fair Use Allowance

Each device operates on a SIM with a data limit matched to its fair use allowance. If the monthly allowance is exceeded, the SIM stops reporting — live location, tracking services, and app-based footage downloads are no longer available until the SIM is reset. The device itself continues to function as normal while powered, recording and storing footage locally; it simply can't report or download that footage until connectivity is restored.

If an incident occurs while your SIM is stopped, footage is still stored on the device and can be retrieved once the SIM is reset — you will not lose evidence from an incident during this period.

Where this happens, Matrix iQ will:

  • Identify that the SIM has stopped reporting due to exceeded data usage
  • Reset the SIM and, where needed, increase the data limit so reporting and downloads are restored for the remainder of the billing month
  • Contact the driver to explain what happened and discuss the usage pattern behind it

The SIM data limit then reverts to the standard allowance at the start of the next rolling month.

Extra data use is not immediately charged. However, where a driver's SIM has stopped due to excessive use on repeated occasions across multiple months, Matrix iQ may cap the data limit going forward rather than continuing to reset and increase it each time.

Why This Policy Exists

Dashcams are provided to give Bolt drivers peace of mind and an evidential record in the event of a genuine incident — not as a continuous surveillance tool. The fair use allowance keeps the service fast, reliable, and cost-effective for every driver on the programme, while ensuring footage is always available when a real event occurs.
